Why do I need one?
One of the best things about lithium batteries is how powerful they are; however, this is a downside as well because normal fuses can’t protect against their extremely high current short circuits.
A typical Lithium battery can produce 10,000-15,000 Amps in a direct short circuit due to its very low internal resistance. With such a high current, this will make typical fuses like mega fuses act like an arc welder, and electricity will still flow through the fuse and cause a fire. Quality Mega Fuses have a maximum interrupting current of 2000-2500 amps, much lower than what a lithium battery can deliver.
Won’t my Lithium's BMS protect me? A high-quality BMS could protect you from small short circuits, but if you have a direct short circuit, it will blow all the MOSFETs in the BMS, and the current will continue to flow through the BMS.
Our Lithium-compatible fuses can protect up to 20,000 amps at 125V DC, so well within the max output spec of lithium batteries. These fuses have the same interruption current as Class T fuses; however, because they don't have the other characteristics that apply to lithium battery protection, they don't fall into the Class T category.
